What is Trauma Informed?

"Trauma informed" is the lingo used in the medical, professional and insurance world to describe a perspective of treating others that stems from recognizing the etiology of the symptoms, behaviors and circumstances an individual, family, group or society now finds itself. We learn to label problems based on the presence of a certain specific set of behaviors (i.e. most DSM mental health diagnoses, medical diagnoses, insurance billing, societal problems). Looking below this symptomatology to underlying factors and forces can address root influencers, create lasting change and increase understanding. These things lessen frustration for all involved in treating, experiencing and loving a human or group who is struggling. They also lessen judgment and shame for all involved, fostering an environment for growth, healing and constructive change - TRAUMA INFORMED CHANGE.
